In what was a remarkable improvement on the past few years, scoring goals was hardly a problem for the South Coast club last term.

Pompey look a team on the ascent with Paul Cook in charge, and the Blues who came agonisingly close to promotion via the play-offs last campaign, look destined for promotion this time around.

Cook's men netted 75 times throughout the course of what was an impressive season for the club, having endured a gruelling few years.

However, it wasn't the matter of conceding goals that cost the club the ultimate prize last term either, stuttering form and injuries was the biggest downfall.

Having already added squad depth in that area this window, with the high profile signings of Carl Baker and Danny Rose, Pompey look to be going in just one way this year, and that's on the up.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer George Harbey identifies the THREE that will construct a formidable partnership up top for the Blues this time around, as Cook looks to surge through to the title...

RW - Kyle Bennett

Kyle Bennett

The Fratton Park faithful are yet to see the best of Bennett.

The 25-year-old, who made 110 appearances for former employers Doncaster Rovers, showed glimpses of brilliance for Pompey last season.

Making 51 appearances for Cook's men last term, the 5 ft 5 man, known for his blistering pace and close ball control, will look to have the same impact as he did at Fratton Park last campaign and terrorise defences, as well as having the ability to fire the ball at goal with venom.

Bennett could be the catalyst of the Blues' success this year, and play an instrumental role.

LW - Milan Lalkovic

One of the most impressive coups made by any team in the window thus far, Lalkovic was a spearhead in Walsall's season last time around, where they came agonisingly close to promotion from League One.

The wide man, who started his career at Chelsea, joined the Saddlers in what was his second spell for the club last campaign, making 21 appearances and netting six times.

The 23-year-old played a pivotal role in the Walsall team last term, and will no doubt be remarkably good in League Two should injuries stay amiss.

A similar type of player to Bennett, Lalkovic's pace and agility will be key when adapting to Cook's free flowing style of play.

ST - Conor Chaplin

Possibly the hottest youth prospect in the league, Chaplin has been at Pompey ever since graduating into the Blues’ academy at the age of six, and making his professional debut in the 2014/15 campaign.

The previous season is where he made an outstanding breakthrough however.

In a campaign where he made seven starting appearances and 32 sub appearances, he netted nine times, staggering for any League Two striker, but especially for the young 19-year-old who has been given added competition with the signings of Michael Smith and Curtis Main this time around.

A lifelong Pompey fan, there is no reason why Chaplin cannot continue the form he has displayed in the last couple of years at Fratton Park - he has taken in the gruelling harshness of League Two with ease.

He’s “one of their own”, and there is no reason why Chaplin cannot be the driving force in Portsmouth’s promotion season this term.

Pompey fans... what do you think of this front three? How much of a good signing is Lalkovic? Is Chaplin capable of scoring 20+ goals this season? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
