The fans at Hillsborough will be desperately hoping that their club can go one better than last season, and mount a serious push for an automatic promotion place.

Last season ended in heartbreak for Wednesday as they lost out to Hull City in the play-0ff final, however manager Carlos Carvalhal will be confident that with the right additions to the squad they will be competing for an automatic promotion spot come the end of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday have the financial muscle to compete with anyone in the Championship under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri and have been keen to strengthen their squad.

There only addition so far this summer has been striker Steven Fletcher. This article takes a look at THREE players who will form the core of the club next season...

Keiren Westwood

Any good team will be built on the solid foundation of a good goalkeeper, and in Keiren Westwood Sheffield Wednesday arguably have one of, if not the most talented goalkeeper in the league.

The Republic of Ireland international signed for Wednesday in the summer of 2014 on a two year deal, and since then he has gone onto make 77 appearances for the South Yorkshire club his terrific performances in a Wednesday shirt have led to him being linked with numerous Premier League clubs - although it would take a special offer to make Wednesday part with their key man.

Westwood can win points on his own with game winning saves and has done so on countless times for Wednesday, if they are to mount a serious push for promotion it is clear they will need this man firing on all cylinders.

Westwood's composure and confidence spreads through the back four and throughout the whole team and he is a calming figure in the Wednesday eleven.

Westwood has previously enjoyed spells at teams such as Sunderland, Carlisle and Coventry.

Kieran Lee

Kieran Lee

Kieran Lee is a major fans favourite at Hillsborough, many feel his contributing to the team often gets overlooked and he is a very underrated performer.

Lee is a box to box all action midfielder who's work rate and desire are never in question, he works tirelessly for the team and is a favourite of manager Carlos Carvalhal because of this.

Since signing for Wednesday in the summer of 2012 Lee has made 140 appearances scoring 14 goals. Lee is a versatile player and can be deployed in a number of different roles if required, he has been known to play right back and right wing although his favoured position is central midfield.

Lee started out at Manchester United where he actually made 3 apperances for the Red Devils' first team, scoring 1 goal in a League Cup tie against Crewe Alexandra.

Kieran Lee has been a key player for Sheffield Wednesday for many years and will be hoping to repeat the same sort of form he enjoyed last season, when he appeared in 51 games scoring 7 goals in their run to the play-off final.

Fernando Forestieri

Fernando Forestieri3

Since Fernando Forestieri put pen to paper with the Owls on the 29th August 2015, he has been somewhat of a revelation at Hillsborough.

Forestieri signed for Wednesday on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Watford, after helping them achieve promotion to the Premier League.

In his first season at Hillsborough Forestieri impressed fans with his silky skills, dribbling ability and his keen eye for a goal.

He appeared 36 times scoring 15 goals during the Owls' run to the play off final where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Hull City.

The Hillsborough faithful will be hoping he can repeat the same sort of form he showed last season to help them push up the league table.

Forestieri has undoubted potential and at the age of 26 he has plenty of time to improve, this potential was realised at international level from a young age with Forestieri having won caps for the Italian national team at Under 17, 19, 20 and 21 level.

He provides a creative spark and a clinical edge to this Sheffield Wednesday team, and if they are to surpass the heights reached last season then they will need this man to be playing to his best.
