Following Sheffield Wednesdays heartbreak in the playoff final last year Carlos Carvalhal has been working hard to bolster his squad for the coming campaign.

Scottish international striker Steven Fletcher has already arrived through the doors at Hillsborough and with more transfer deals expected it leaves some players position in the squad under question.

This will leave some players fighting for their future and with the sleeping giant slowly but surely waking up, I'm sure none will want to leave of their own accord.

This article takes a look at THREE Wednesday players who will be fighting for their futures at the club in the forthcoming season...

Jeremy Helan

Former France under-19 international Jeremy Helan is someone who's place in the squad is clearly under threat, he made just 22 appearances for the Owls last season and spent the back end of the campaign on loan at fellow Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers where he made a further 8 appearances.

Although, he did return to the Owls side for the Championship play off final where he came off the bench to play a part, but the decision to bring Helan on in that game did cause confusion among fans.

Helan is a versatile player who can play either in a full back role on the left hand side or further forward as a winger, he is a player of incredible pace and power and when he is on song he is a real handful. But, his consistency is what frustrates Sheffield Wednesday fans. Since signing for the Owls he has made 128 appearances scoring just 4 goals.

Lewis McGugan

After making just 15 appearances last season Lewis McGugan is another player who will be trying to prove their worth to manager Carlos Carvalhal in the forthcoming season.

Before signing on a permanent basis McGugan enjoyed two loan spells at Hillsborough where he made 22 appearances scoring 3 goals in the two stints combined. Since signing in the summer of 2015 he has found it difficult to break into the first team and has had limited opportunity's although in his 15 appearances last season he did average a goal every 3 games.

He is widely regarded as a set piece specialist as he takes a wicked corner and deadly free-kick, he has incredible technical ability and has been unlucky to find himself behind players such as Kieran Lee who has been playing the best football of his career in the past year or so.

McGugan will be hopeful of more first team chances next season in the hope he can prove his worth to the Owls faithful.

Atdhe Nuhiu

Nuhiu is someone who has split opinions between the Sheffield Wednesday fans and has caused many an argument in the local pub, many believe he gives the Owls a different dimension when going forward although many will disagree with that and believe he doesn't offer much to the team at all.

Nuhiu stands at 6ft 6 inches tall and is a target man type of forward who's goal scoring record is anything but spectacular, since signing for Sheffield Wednesday he has made 121 appearances, although he has only scored 19 goals.

Nuhiu is a big physical presence up top however and he can offer a lot more to the team than just goals, he has great physical strength and is good at holding the ball up and bringing others into play. Nuhiu has been capped by the Austrian national side at under 17, 19 and 21 level, at under-21 level Nuhiu made 13 appearances scoring 7 goals.

Nuhiu did feature heavily over the last season but after the arrival of Scottish international Steven Fletcher he will find his position in the team under increasing pressure.
