Gary Rowett has done a sterling job since arriving at St Andrew's with the club being transformed from Championship relegation battlers, into a club that is knocking on the door of the play-off places and a potential route back into the Premier League.

Last season saw the Blues finish 10th place in the Championship for a second season running, but things are continuing to move in the right direction for the Midlands club as they settle things both on and off the pitch.

This season will see the Second City Derby return to English football with Aston Villa suffering relegation from the top flight, so Rowett will have his focus both on league success and local derby success.

The big question is which players from the Premier League could help take Rowett's side to the next level and give them the best chance of a return to the promised land of the Premier League?

Here, Football League World writer Steve Day looks at THREE players from the top flight of English football that Rowett should certainly look to add to his squad for the 2016/17 season.....

Patrick Bamford

It is one of the most obvious facts surrounding Birmingham at the moment.

They need more goals up front. Clayton Donaldson finished at the club's top league scorer last season with just 11 goals.

It shows a lack of quality in the final third that definitely needs addressing.

Bamford remains a Chelsea player but it's likely that he will either be loaned out once again this season, or he will be sold if a decent bid comes in.

He struggled last season with loan spells at Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and Norwich, but he thrived at Middlesbrough in the Championship in the 2014/15 season where he scored 19 goals in 43 games.

New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte may well want to give his own view of Bamford but it seems unlikely he will feature regularly, and after his disappointing spells at other clubs in the top flight he might well consider a move back down to the Championship a better option.

Tyias Browning

One area that Birmingham need fresh blood is in the full back positions.

Paul Caddis, Neal Eardley and Jonathan Grounds have been solid over the years but they are far from the best full backs in the Championship.

The ageing Paul Robinson may well be club captain but at 37 years of age there are question marks over how long he can keep going.

Everton starlet Browning is begging for first team football.

He is unlikely to see much action at Goodison Park with the likes of Seamus Coleman, Leighton Baines, Luke Garbutt, and Brendan Galloway all competing for the full back slots.

The 22-year-old is at danger of seeing his career pass him by if he doesn't get first team football soon.

New Toffees manager Ronald Koeman may well see a loan move as an ideal opportunity to nurture Browning for the future.

Browning is also able to cover centre back which will be another area the Blues will need to strengthen.

Jonathan Williams

Central midfield is an area where Rowett will feel his team could always do with strengthening.

The best teams in the Championship always have a strong spine and there always needs to be that creative dynamism in there too.

The midfield can play a large role in creating opportunities for the strikers and with only 53 goals scored last season.

Williams could well be that creative engine Rowett craves.

The signing of Nottingham Forest deep-lying midfielder Robert Tesche has seen Rowett address the defensive responsibilities of the middle of the park, and bringing Williams in would link that midfield with the front line.

He has impressed for Wales at the 2016 European Championship by doing exactly that.

The 22 year old is nicknamed “Joniesta” for his ability to unlock opposition defences and it is unlikely he will see much game time at Selhurst Park for Crystal Palace, whilst Alan Pardew remains in charge so the Blues could offer his career a shot in the arm it needs.

Are these three players suitable signings for Birmingham? Or do the Blues need to strengthen in other areas? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
