Charlton Athletic are in desperate need of some fresh new faces in their midfield department after suffering relegation from the Sky Bet Championship into League One.

Captain Johnnie Jackson is in the latter stages of his career at 33 years of age, and can't boss the midfield like he used to, and Ahmed Kashi will most likely be sold on after a poor season.

Jordan Cousins looks set to join QPR, with the London club having already seen an offer rejected, and at 34 years of age, Charlton may look to cash in on Alou Diarra.

That leaves El-Hadji Ba as the only defensive midfield option, and in terms of attacking midfielders, the Addicks do not have any.

It is going to be a big summer for new boss Russell Slade, and the former Cardiff man has already made steps in the right direction by bringing in Ricky Holmes from Northampton Town.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Harry Smith identifies THREE central midfielders who would undoubtedly improve Charlton Athletic...

Ryan Leonard

The talented 24-year-old has established himself as a fan favourite at Southend United after joining in 2011 from Plymouth Argyle.

Leonard has all the characteristics of the perfect modern midfielder, with pace, an excellent passing range and also an eye for goal, which he showed with a bicycle kick against Burton Albion in the play-offs a few years ago.

Leonard would be the perfect fit for Charlton's midfield next season.

Jamie O'Hara

The midfielder was released by Fulham at the end of the 2015/16 season, but has undoubted ability, which was shown by the fact he made 32 Championship appearances for the Cottagers last term.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers playmaker would be an excellent signing for League One level, if Charlton could snap him up, as he would add some much needed bite to what was quite a tame midfield last season.

Andrew Crofts

Crofts had spent four years at Brighton between 2012 and 2016 before he was released at the end of last season after a short stint out on loan at Gillingham.

At 32 years of age, the former Norwich midfielder isn't getting any younger, but would provide some much needed experience to this Charlton midfield.

If he could strike up a good partnership with El-Hadji Ba in the centre of the park next season, then Charlton could be on their way back to the Championship.
