Birmingham City are a Championship club with a long and proud history in the top flight, despite never topping the pile in England.

But for their proud following of supporters, success was never something that was going to appear at St Andrews with relative ease which is why recent success has really been held onto in the Midlands.

The League Cup win was one of the biggest days in the history of the club and a day that few will forget anytime soon.

And with recent success not too far back in their history, we want to delve deeper into the Brum history books and look at some of the best players to have ever graced the pitch in Royal Blue.

Believe it or not, there are a fair few to chose from, which has made picking a trio quite difficult.

But FLW's Hayden Atkins has narrowed it down and here's 3 Birmingham City legends that will forever go down in history at St Andrew's...

Gil Merrick

Gill Merrick

Perhaps one of the biggest Birmingham City legends to have ever lived, Gil Merrick is the finest goalkeeper the club has ever seen.

Born in the City, he signed in 1939, just before the Second World War broke out.

He won Second Division medals on two occasions whilst also playing in goal in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City in 1956.

He made a record 551 appearances for the club and his fantastic skill between the sticks was always remembered alongside his slight air of flamboyance.

Shortly after his death in 2010, the old Railway Stand was renamed in his honour.

A real club legend.

Trevor Francis

Britain's first ever £1million footballer, Trevor Francis will definitely go down as one of the most memorable players in Birmingham City history.

"Superboy" as he was known amongst the Blues faithful, he scored 133 goals in his spell at St Andrews before moving onto Nottingham Forest.

He was perhaps the most gifted footballer Blues have ever seen, with a fantastic ability to run at opponents and a man with a wicked eye for goal too.

Christophe Dugarry

Former French international Christophe Dugarry wasn't at St Andrews for long but he still goes down as one of the most exciting players to have ever played in the second city.

He played just 37 games and scored six goals which on paper, doesn't seem too overwhelming.

But for the people and supporters of Birmingham, to see a player blessed with such skill, flair and flamboyance was a real rarity.

Knee injuries blighted his time in England towards the end of his career but what a player he was when he was fit and leading the front line.
