Sheffield Wednesday look on course to replicate the success they had last season by reaching the play-offs - they currently sit in sixth place in the Championship table.

One of the reasons for Sheffield Wednesday's replication of their success is their movement in the transfer market, which has seen the notable summer arrivals of Steven Fletcher and Almen Abdi only further strengthened by their January business, which included the signings of Jordan Rhodes and Callum McManaman.

As Sheffield Wednesday's squad continues to increase in both size and quality, some players have drifted to the outer fringes of the squad and some have even been loaned out.

Carlos Carvalhal will have already began making plans for next season and assessing his squad to determine which fringe players should leave in the summer.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at two Sheffield Wednesday fringe players who need to be offloaded from the team in the summer.

Filipe Melo

As part of the Portuguese transformation at Sheffield Wednesday, Filipe Melo joined the South Yorkshire club from Moreirense FC in 2015.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder has only made six appearances for the Championship side since joining them.

Having failed to adapt and acclimatise to English football, the Portuguese midfielder returned to the Liga NOS on loan, this time to mid-table side FC Paços de Ferreira.

As Filipe Melo failed to make a single match-day squad before making the loan move back to Portugal, Melo has been very much on the fringes of Sheffield Wednesday's first team squad.

In what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday, one player that is almost definitely going to be offloaded is Filipe Melo.

Lucas Joao

The 23-year-old striker joined Sheffield Wednesday from Liga NOS side Nacional for a reasonable fee in the summer of 2015.

After being ever-present for Carlos Carvalhal's side, making forty Championship appearances in his debut season at the South Yorkshire club, some may have thought that he would've continued to be involved on a regular basis.

However, the arrival of Steven Fletcher and Jordan Rhodes has seen the Portuguese centre-forward fall down the pecking order.

Carlos Carvalhal's decision to loan Lucas Joao to Sky Bet Championship strugglers Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season suggested that Joao's future at the club could be seriously under threat.

Once Joao returns from his loan at the end of the season, it would not be a surprise to see the Portuguese forward offloaded in the summer to free up more space for new arrivals.
