Cardiff City are sitting just outside the play-offs in eighth place, and some might question the club’s inconsistency this season that has lead them to fall just short of their ambitions, once again.

This is the Bluebirds second season in the second-tier and after a recent Twitter poll that was set up by FLW, a stand-out 87% of readers felt that the club would not make the top six.

Many of the supporters feel that Cardiff’s inconsistency over the past five years has severely come down to the lack of quality signings being brought into the club.

In the past five years, players have come and gone who have severely underachieved at the club.

There have been plenty of business regrets over the past few years from the likes of Ole Gunnar Solsjaer and the present boss Russell Slade, that many of the fans will be scratching their heads about.

GK – Stephen Bywater

Stephen Bywater

Along with Peter Zois, Bywater was a good candidate for the Bluebirds’ worst ever goalkeeper and there have been a few.

Bywater had two spells on loan with the Bluebirds. The first was in 2002 when he didn’t play at all and the second nine years later under Dave Jones when he made eight appearances.

An error against Reading in the play-off semi-finals proved costly as Cardiff lost 3-0 at home.

It certainly helped Jones lose his job.

RB – Miguel Comminges

Miguel Comminges

The right back was a Guadeloupe international and started just ten games for the Bluebirds during his time at the club.

He was a player that no one ever got too excited about and looked completely out of his depth during his time at the club.

He struggled to cope in the tough nature of the Championship and looked edgy whenever he was on the ball.

Comminges's Bluebirds career will definitely will not live on in South Wales.

CB – Gabor Gyepes

Gabor Gyepes

The Hungarian defender was always on the outskirts of the squad after admitting he was a fourth-choice centre back for the club.

There was a reason for that, he never felt at home when playing for the South Wales and he made the Cardiff City supporters nervous.

He is one of a number of players that the Bluebirds had signed unknown players to see if they can make an impact in the Championship.

However he proved majorly unsuccessful during his time in South Wales.

CB – Anthony Gerrard

Since Gerrard missed that crucial penalty against Liverpool in the League Cup final, it will always leave a bitter taste with the supporters who were within moments of boasting a Cup final victory.

The defender was the typical hard faced defender who had similarities to Roger Johnson, but never really made the cut with the club.

His breakdown with manager Malky Mackay severely affected his performances and that saw him fall out favour at the club.

LB – J Lloyd Samuel

J Lloyd Samuel

The left back who joined City on loan from Bolton during March 2011, stayed until the end of that season.

He made only six appearances, including the Bluebirds' disastrous 3-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough in May that year as they missed out on automatic promotion.

Samuel was at the centre of a storm for that defeat after being rumoured to have been on a boozy night out the day before the important clash.

Samuel has just returned to Britain after a spell playing in Iran.

RW – Wilfried Zaha

Everyone it seemed wanted the thrilling young wideman from Manchester United.

Then-Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer beat off the competition thanks to his Old Trafford credentials then proceeded to fail miserably in getting the best out of Zaha.

No goals in 12 league games, watching Zaha at Cardiff was extremely frustrated, as the supporters knew of his potential as he caused nightmares for the Cardiff full back during his times with Crystal Palace.

CM – Simon Lappin

Simon Lappin

Signed from Norwich in November 2012, but was sent off on his debut in a 2-1 win at Barnsley that would have not made a good first impression.

Lappin made only two first-team appearances, before returning to Norwich and then came back as a full signing, but did not play again.

Lappin is now playing at St Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League.

CM – Magnus Wolff Eikrem

Magnus Wolff Eikrem

This was another Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signing that failed to make any impact at the club.

Along with Daehli, he had a big reputation in Norway’s ranks but never really settled into the different style of play that the English league has to offer.

Since Russell Slade took over, Eikrem never played a single game under Slade and his contract was mutually terminated.

LM – Sammy Ameobi

sammy ameobi

The latest in a long line of maverick talents that Cardiff have signed with seemingly no idea how best to utilise, Ameobi joins Wilfried Zaha as recent flair flops.

The Newcastle loan player has a lot of potential, but has never really put himself about for the Bluebirds.

After six months at the club, you would still be hard pressed to identify who he would be a direct replacement for.

He remains an enigma and a selection headache for Russell Slade.

ST – Andreas Cornelius

Andreas Cornelius

The club signed the Danish striker for a record £8.5 million fee and he hardly contributed to his Bluebirds career.

Malky Mackay got it seriously wrong with signing the powerful frontman who many of the supporters had never heard of.

The pressure seemed to have got to the Danish striker after his hefty fee, and the Bluebirds supporters were severely disappointed in Cornelius.

Many voiced their opinions on how he was a waste of money for the club.

ST – Etien Velikonja

Etien Velikonja

The Slovenian striker arrived in South Wales unannounced in 2013 after Vincent Tan signed him without Mackay’s permission.

The Scottish manager did not want to sign the forward and cost the club £1.7 million that could have gone towards a better player for the club.

He only played 73 minutes of league football in 15 months and completed only one game, when he was named in the starting XI for the 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Macclesfield.

Velikonja is definitely one of the biggest flops in the club’s history.
