This weekend sees Charlton make the trip to Deepdale to face 10th place Preston North End in the Championship, looking to put their dismal away record behind them.

Ahead of the important game, Lee Bowyer faced the press on Thursday afternoon, as the Charlton boss opened up on a range of important subjects.

The hottest topic of discussion was the progress of Bowyer's new contract, with the Addicks manager commenting that all of the key details are close to being finalised.

“I’ve had some good, positive conversations [on Wednesday] and this morning, so we’re nearly there. Just one or two small adjustments and we’re there. It’s positive and I’m pleased with what I’m hearing," the Charlton boss said.

It was reported earlier this week that the 43-year-old had been offered a new five-year deal by the club to remain at The Valley.

Peterborough United attacking midfielder Marcus Maddison has also been linked with a move to Charlton over the last week, but Bowyer was keen to distance himself from that development.

"Regarding Maddison, I don’t think it’s fair to talk about him because he plays for Peterborough. I think he’s an excellent player, but I don’t think it’s fair to talk about anything other than that."

He added that himself and Director of Football Steve Gallen have got a list of targets in mind for the transfer window, but also acknowledged that January was a "tough" month to get deals over the line.

Lastly, the departure of Conor Gallagher was discussed, with Bowyer disappointed that Chelsea took the option to recall the 19-year-old from his loan spell at Charlton.

The midfielder has since joined Swansea on a deal until the end of the season.

“It’s a big blow. Conor has been one of our best players and it’s obvious for everyone to see. I think he would have got better and better. No one expected him to do what he did and it just shows the job that we do here."

"That’s why it hurt me. Because I wanted to keep working with Conor and keep improving him. But he is Chelsea’s player," Bowyer added.
