Barnsley will be hoping to kickstart their season after appointing a new head coach at the club.

The Tykes appointed Gerhard Struber on Wednesday and handed the the Austrian a two-and-a-half year contract after sacking Daniel Stendel.

Struber faces a massive task at Oakwell as he looks to guide Barnsley away from the relegation zone as he seeks to avoid an immediate return to League One.

However with just one win to their name - a victory that came on the opening day of the season against Fulham - it seems like he could be facing a huge challenge.

But what are the key areas for Struber to address? Here are the three key areas on his to-do list.

Solidify that leaky defence

Granted, it's easier said than done.

Barnsley have conceded a staggering 33 goals so far this season, averaging over two goals conceded in each of their 16 games in the Championship so far.

The expectation for the Tykes to score three goals a game in order to win matches is ridiculous, which means that they'll need to tighten up the defence if they're to have any chance of survival.

Address home form

Many a survival campaign have been built on solid run of home form.

Unfortunately for Barnsley, they've won just one game at Oakwell this term which was the opening day victory over Fulham.

If the Tykes can improve that home form and make Oakwell a difficult place that teams will fear, they'll go a long way to getting the required number of points on the board to survive.

Increase service to Cauley Woodrow

He's arguably their biggest asset, and Barnsley must use Cauley Woodrow to his full potential

The striker has scored six goals so far this term, and if the Tykes can maximise his impact then it'll no doubt make a huge difference to their hopes.

Other than Alex Mowatt, Barnsley have struggled for creativity in midfield and so that's an area that could also be addressed.
