After heartbreak at the end of last season falling just short in the play-off final, Carlos Carvalhal and Sheffield Wednesday were determined to come back even stronger.

Building on the momentum of last season, Carlos Carvalhal did well to keep the squad together despite interest from the Premier League and from Championship rivals for their star players.

Although Sheffield Wednesday fans may have gone into the season feeling relatively confident, it has been anything but that for the South Yorkshire side who have had a rollercoaster of a season so far.

As the Championship is such a long enduring marathon, Sheffield Wednesday has been faced with a mixture of emotions which has seen both a number of highs and number of lows this season.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at two of Sheffield Wednesday's biggest highs and biggest lows so far this season...

High - Newcastle United 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

In what was an extremely close encounter between two promotion rivals, Sheffield Wednesday came out on top, taking all three points from St James' Park.

Although Newcastle's home form has been questionable, Sheffield Wednesday and Carlos Carvalhal showed their tactical ability and competitive edge against a promotion favourite.

The victory over Newcastle had a symbolic meaning as it inspired confidence in the South Yorkshire side that they were capable of beating any side in the division.

Sheffield Wednesday's victory in such a crucial top six clash ensured their place in the playoff places after a shaky start to the season.

The victory was one of the biggest highs for Sheffield Wednesday this season as it gave the South Yorkshire club the momentum to build a run of form which has cemented their position in the playoff places.

High - January transfer business

Sheffield Wednesday and Carlos Carvalhal had assembled an excellent squad last season, however, the high-quality business they carried out in the January transfer window, pushed them to another level.

As well as offloading the fringe players such as Filipe Melo and Lucas Joao, Carlos Carvalhal also significantly strengthened his side.

The arrival of Callum McManaman on loan may have sailed under the radar compared to some of the major deals done in the Skybet Championship, however, McManaman has proved himself to be one of the best wingers in the Championship when at Wigan Athletic.

Significantly, Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall joining Sheffield Wednesday helped further bolster the attacking line to have one of the potent strike-forces in the entire division.

The business carried out by the South Yorkshire side was one of their biggest highs this season as it reinforced their playoff position and made them one of the biggest threats in the second half of the season.

Low - Early season form

Although Sheffield Wednesday currently look set for a play-off finish, many would've expected the South Yorkshire side to push on for the automatic promotion places.

One of the reasons why Sheffield Wednesday are currently ten points behind the automatic promotion places is Sheffield Wednesday's poor early season form.

After five matches, Sheffield Wednesday and Carlos Carvalhal were already under intense scrutiny as they sat in 19th place with just five points from a possible fifteen.

Defeats to Burton Albion and Leeds United as well as draws against Norwich and Brentford saw Sheffield Wednesday's only victory in their first five games coming against Aston Villa.

Although at the time, it didn't appear to be one of Sheffield Wednesday's biggest lows of the season, it could prove extremely costly in the hunt for an automatic promotion place as the South Yorkshire side has had to play catch up for the vast majority of the season.

Low - Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Brighton & Hove Albion

Sheffield Wednesday's home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion was the moment that their hopes of automatic promotion were dashed.

Not only the significance of the defeat against a promotion rival but the nature of it was particularly demoralising for the South Yorkshire side.

After Glenn Murray was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity after blocking a shot with his hands, Sheffield Wednesday was given the opportunity to take the lead in a close encounter.

However, Fernando Forestieri's penalty was saved and his follow up shot was also tipped around the post by David Stockdale.

Despite facing ten men, Sheffield Wednesday did not capitalise on their advantage and they were punished when Anthony Knockaert turned in a late winner for the Seagulls.

The match was one of the biggest lows for Sheffield Wednesday this season as it had not only had symbolic implications but also the South Yorkshire side lost Steven Fletcher and Sam Hutchinson who were both dismissed.
