Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has claimed that his side's fighting spirit will see them secure Championship survival this season, which has drawn a mixed response from fans of the south London club.

The Addicks slipped to a frustrating defeat at the hands of Brentford last night, leading until the 75th minute but seeing Thomas Frank's men grab all three points late on.

Macauley Bonne nodded the visitors ahead at Griffin Park in the eighth minute and for long periods it looked as if that would be enough to ensure they claimed a vital win.

But the Bees, who are hot on the heels of the top two, grabbed their equaliser through Said Benrahma in the 75th minute before Ethan Pinnock headed in the winner with five minutes left of normal time.

The result sees Brentford move to within two points of the automatic promotion places, while Charlton remain only two points above the bottom three – having played one more game than some of the sides below them.

Speaking after the game, Bowyer suggested that the sort of fight his side had shown would see them through in the end.

He said (via the club website): "With the situation that we are in we have to fight for every point and put our bodies on the line, we’ve got four games to go and if we keep performing like that and showing our fighting spirit then we can get over the line.”

Bowyer's comments have drawn a mixed reaction from the Valley faithful, with some taking blaming him for the result and others commending the side's performance.
