Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Connor Kirby is reportedly set to make a temporary exit from the club.

According to Football Insider, the 20-year-old has agreed a deal to join League Two side Macclesfield Town on a season-long loan after manager Sol Campbell approached the Owls with an offer.

Although Kirby has been the subject of interest from a number of Football League clubs this summer, the Silkmen have seemingly won the race for his signature.

A product of the Wednesday's youth academy, Kirby made his debut for the club in 2018 against Reading but has since failed to establish himself at senior level, appearing just three times during the previous campaign.

With his existing deal with the club set to expire next summer (via Transfermarkt) it is unclear whether the midfielder is part of the Owls' long-term plans for the future.

Given that Kirby is currently below the likes of Barry Bannan and Sam Hutchinson in the pecking order at Hillsborough, Wednesday are thought to be happy to loan him out as it will give him a better chance of playing regular first-team football.

The Verdict

Having failed to kick-on since initially breaking into the team last year, a move away from the Owls for Kirby could end up being beneficial for both parties.

Whereas opting to stay in South Yorkshire to play under-23 football for Wednesday would have only had a limited impact on his development as a player, the competitiveness on offer week-in, week-out in League Two may do the midfielder a world of good.

With Campbell possessing a great deal of wisdom which dates back to his playing days, he will be confident that he can get the best out of Kirby at Macclesfield.

However, if Kirby does indeed make this switch, he will have to fight his way into contention for a place in the Silkmen's starting eleven with Jak McCourt and Jay Harris currently occupying the midfield positions.
