George Boyd hasn't had much impact since joining in the summer, but he has long-term aims with the club.

The ex-Burnley man joined as a free agent in 2017, but injuries and inconsistency generally among the team have plagued his first season at the club.

In the league, he has only played 14 times and has just a solitary goal to his name.

He was brought in to add some extra experience to a side that had come desperately close to achieving promotion in the last two consecutive seasons. However, Wednesday have fallen down the division as the season has gone on with eight points separating them from the drop.

The winger clearly hasn't let it lower his expectations, though, as he had this to say to the official Wednesday site:

We need to get to the end of the season and I’m more than excited for next season with the squad we’ve got.

I feel we can mount a serious promotion push, if we had every one fit, we would be up there.

There is no doubt about that with what we have in the dressing room.

We have to deal with the hand we’ve been dealt this season and go again next. There is more than enough in that dressing room.

The Verdict

This is a positive sign for Wednesday fans because it appears as if the team still has the belief in their own quality even if recent performances aren't showing that.

It's also good to hear that the players are just as frustrated as the fans are with the disappointing league position and the long injury list. That connection is sure to help the team in the last games of the season.

Boyd is clearly using his experience to give the younger players a target to aim for after such a tough season in order to increase the level of performance. The winger just needs to back up these words on the pitch because he has done little to show the quality that he possessed at Burnley.
