Sheffield Wednesday ‘keeper Cameron Dawson expressed his delight at keeping a clean sheet in his side’s 1-0 win over Stoke City on Tuesday night.

Cameron Dawson pulled off an incredible point-blank save to deny Stoke’s Lee Gregory from a certain equaliser as he kept a clean sheet, lifting the Owls up to third. Garry Monk’s side are in fine form as they sit only one point from the automatic promotion places, and face second-placed Leeds United at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.

The South Yorkshire side took the lead through Massimo Luongo in the first half as he broke through the line and coolly slotted past Dawson’s opposite number, Adam Federici.

In a cagey affair under the lights, there weren’t many chances for Stoke to salvage anything from the game. The Potters will have thought they had nicked an equaliser when Lee Gregory headed low from six yards out, but Dawson somehow managed to react quickly to dive to his left and claw the ball away from goal.

When speaking to the club’s official site, Dawson had this to say on his crucial contribution: “I was delighted!

"It’s always good to contribute a save, and if that means getting a win then it’s nice, but at the end of the day that’s what I’m there to do, so to be able to contribute is great.

“We started off really well in the first half and were really strong. We could have gone into half time a few more up which would have been good.

“We came out in the second half and didn’t quite play like we can but showed real character to dig in and get the three points.

After the game, Dawson was praised by teammate Barry Bannan for maintaining focus in a game where he had little to do, he added: “That’s the life of a goalie.

“You have to stay switched on because you could be called upon at any time, so it’s part of the job to stay switched on and do the job in big moments, and I was fortunate to do that.”

The Verdict

The Owls are enjoying a fine spell of form under Garry Monk and individual performances and efforts like Dawson’s on Tuesday night are the reason for where they are in the table.

Garry Monk’s side face a stern test on Saturday as they face the side one place and point above them in Leeds.

Monk will be looking to get one over on his former club, having done so twice last season with Birmingham City, but he will definitely need his side in top form, no more so than his ‘keeper, Dawson.
