Sheffield United and Norwich City both achieved promotion from the Championship, battling for the title which eventually went the way of the Canaries.

They're set to do battle again, this time for the services of former Chelsea midfielder Jon Obi Mikel, as reported by ESPN.

32-year-old Mikel spent the latter part of last season on a short-term deal with Middlesbrough, but has left the club now that deal has come to an end. Unsurprisingly for a player of his calibre, he's thought to have a lot of options including the two sides promoted this season.

Mikel won't be making any imminent moves, he's been recalled to the Nigeria squad this summer for the African Cup of Nations and will wait until after that to make a decision.

Mikel has 85 Nigeria caps to his name and rose to prominence as part of a successful Chelsea side that won the Champions League, the Europa League, two Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

He moved to Chinese side Tianjin TEDA in January 2017, returning to England with Boro a year later.

The Verdict

Mikel is still a top player, he's only 32 and has plenty to offer an aspiring Premier League side. He's a born winner and has enough silverware behind him to prove that.

I could see him fitting in a Sheffield United. Chris Wilder gets the best out of older players and Mikel would add a certain steel in front of the back three that might make them hard to beat.
