Swansea City have had a great start to the season in picking up seven points from a possible nine, and much of that is due to the revival of Borja Baston.

The Spaniard, who was once Swansea's record signing after a £15m move, hadn't played for the club since 2017, but the arrival of Steve Cooper has led to a renewed opportunity which Baston has snapped up.

Speculation linking him with a move away is still circulating, but he is a firm part of the manager's plans and he could be set to stay at the Liberty Stadium.

Here, our FLW Six Pointer examines his great start in the Championship and the situation he finds himself in.

First of all, did you see this development happening?

"It is likely that nobody would have seen a future for Borja Baston at Swansea and many were probably waiting for the announcement of his move away.

"Prior to this season the 26-year-old hadn't played for the club since May 2017 and up to that point had scored just one goal in 20 appearances, and therefore was deemed a calamitous transfer and subsequently shipped out on loan.

"Swansea have sold of most of their high earners since relegation from the Premier League and give the interest in Baston it seemed that he would be high amongst the list of players the club would look to offload.

"It is also surprising from the player's perspective, that he is willing to stay in South Wales and play in the Championship for the season, particularly after spending the majority of the last two years in his native Spain."

Why do you think it has started to click for him after such a long period of failure?

"It is difficult to pinpoint but it is possible that he has started to realise that he is running out of opportunities to impress and risks being without a club when his contract expires, or receiving contract offers that are well below his monetary desire.

"It is also possible that Cooper has come in and had a word with him about his future, and told him what he thinks of his ability and how important he could be for his teams.

"Many players like to feel valued and the Spaniard will likely be the same after three years spent at different clubs with limited success, particularly in terms of goals.

"Also, he suits Swansea's passing style and is now playing at a level which his ability is more suited to. Swansea play around him to maximise his attributes and he gets in good goalscoring opportunities, which is why he has been prolific in front of goal so far."

How likely is it that he will depart before the end of the summer?

"There is still interest from Spain with Rayo Vallecano believed to be the latest club interested, but at this stage it is unlikely he will leave.

"It looked possible that a departure might happen earlier in the summer but Swansea have sold Oli McBurnie and their transfer window is closed so they wouldn't be able to sign a replacement for Baston.

"The only issue which could arise is if the player makes a demand to leave, but he appears to be enjoying his football and will likely look to continue his run of scoring goals and winning matches, so he should stay for the foreseeable future."

If he does stay, how important could he be for the Swans this season?

"He is already proving to be a bit of a talisman this season and is certainly the focal point to the Swans attack.

"Swansea also have Sam Surridge and Andre Ayew, who could also leave, and therefore Cooper has a lack of attacking options to choose from, so if Baston was to leave it is possible that goals could dry up.

"Baston has already proved suitable to the team and the style and pace of the division. He has scored three well-taken goals so far and there is no reason why he cannot maintain that.

"If he does manage to continue his success so far he could score around 20 league goals this season, a figure which is guaranteed to push his team towards the upper echelons of the Championship."

Is it possible that he could not only stay but renew his contract ahead of its expiration next summer?

"There is still a lot to be decided and it would be some turnaround if this was to happen, but it is definitely possible.

"Baston knows he has to prove his quality in order to get a contract somewhere, and if ends up as one of the division's highest scorers then the club will be keen to prolong his stay.

"Such form would lead him to gain interest from elsewhere from clubs who may be able to offer more money, but Baston could decide that continuing to play in Wales and for Cooper is what he wants and needs for his career.

"If he continues his current form until January it is likely the club will do everything they can to keep him, and therefore contract talks could begin around the new year - something which has seemed incredibly unlikely for much of his time at the Swans."

Is it a testament to Steve Cooper's management that he has been brought back into the team and impressed?

"Cooper is already making his mark on the club and deserves plaudits for the work he has done so far in difficult circumstances.

"He has lost two of his best players in McBurnie and Dan James and for the most part has had to rely on signing loans and free agents.

"The likes of Ayew and Baston looked certain to leave but he must have done something to persuade the pair to stay and not only are they still Swansea players, but they are playing well too.

"Cooper is clearly a great man-manager, as his spell with England U17s proved, and he has structured his team around Baston, which was a very bold move given his reputation at the club.

"If Baston continues to excel then Cooper deserves every credit, as many previous Swansea managers have been unable to get Baston firing."
