Manchester United are apparently the biggest club in England according to a pole conducted by the Daily Mail and while that will come as little surprise to most people, the fact that Championship sides Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United both feature in the top 20 may well do.

In fact, so big are these clubs that they both feature on the list in a tied position of 13th - and it serves as a massive reminder of just how big the sides used to be before their respective falls from grace.

Both would pride themselves on passionate fans, who are both knowledgeable about the beautiful game and loyal to their clubs.

That much is pretty evident, with both sides taking dramatic falls in recent years, yo yoing through the lower echelons of the football leagues before clawing their way back up only to see themselves fall again (in the case of Wolves at least).

In case you were wondering, the poll took into account six things - the crowds, the level of income, trophies won by the club, global fanbase and player quality.

The reason the Midlands club rank so highly is down to the fact that they have won major trophies including four FA Cups and can boast of having higher attendances at Molineux and a bigger income than most clubs.

Leeds are perhaps the ones most people would have expected to push the top ten if any lower league side was going to do so, with the once Champions League side still able to take formidable crowds on away days and despite many, many off the field problems, they are still a side who are a global name and a club the majority of  people know at least a little bit about - though most of it would not be overly flattering these days.

Fans of Bolton, Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday may like to consider themselves the biggest clubs in the lower tiers of English football but this table will tell you otherwise.
