The 27-year-old forward, who began his career at Derby as a trainee before spells at Swindon, Bradford, Walsall, Oxford and Southampton will be kept at the club until early January, when the deal expires.

Holmes has made 60 appearances for North End since joining from Southampton in 2012, scoring five goals.

“Lee’s a good addition to our squad and we’re delighted that he’s signed," said Portsmouth boss Andy Awford to the club's official website.
“There are a lot of games coming up over the busy Christmas period, so we’re going to need a lot of bodies.
“He’s a great asset to have and we’d like to thank Preston for their help in getting the deal over the line.”
The former England under-19 international will wear the number 28 shirt during his short stay at Fratton Park.
Portsmouth currently lie in tenth position in the Sky Bet League Two table, just four points outside the play-off zone.
