Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook has backed summer signings Kieffer Moore and Jamal Lowe to break their scoring ducks for the club, following slow starts to their time at The DW Stadium

Both players made the move to Wigan in the summer transfer window, with the pair reported to have cost the Latics around £2.5million each.

Moore and Lowe were both prolific in League One last season, scoring 32 goals between them for Barnsley and Portsmouth respectively.

It has been a difficult start to the current Championship campaign for the duo, however, with both failing to find the net for the Latics so far this season, although Cook is confident that that is something that will soon change.

Speaking to Wigan Today about the duo, the Latics boss said: “Until they both score we’re always going to have the same conversations about them needing a goal.

“But as far as I’m concerned we need points on the board – and I’m not particularly interested in who scores the goals.

“It can be tough when you step up a level, but they scored a lot of goals between them in League One last year, and I feel they’ve both adapted really well to Championship football.

"It’s only a matter of time before both lads get off the mark.”

Following their 1-0 win at home to Birmingham City on Tuesday night, Wigan are now 19th in the Championship, with that victory their third in ten league games this season.

The Latics are next in action when they travel to Hillsborough on Saturday to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

The Verdict

I do think the both Moore and Lowe need to get off the mark quickly for Wigan.

While Cook has said that he is not too concerned where the goals come from, the record of these two players last season means you imagine that putting the ball in the back of the net was the main reason they were brought to The DW in the summer.

With that in mind, it will be hard for the rest of the squad to continue to fill in for them while they look to find their feet at this level, something which could cost the Latics further down the line if Moore and Lowe do not break those ducks soon.

As Cook says, the longer they have to wait for a goal, the more discussion there will be about that issue, and that is something that is not going to help either player here as they look to cope with that pressure.
