Queens Park Rangers’ forward Paul Smyth is on-loan at League One’s Wycombe Wanderers this season and after almost three months out, he made his return to action last night.

Wycombe and QPR seem to have a good relationship when it comes to loan-signings - several QPR youngsters have made the temporary move in the past, Ebere Eze one of them, and Smyth is one of two on-loan from the West Londoners this season.

Giles Phillips being the other, but Smyth is definitely the one that Wycombe fans are most excited about. The 22-year-old scored the Chairboys maiden goal of the season on the opening day against Bolton, and looked a fine acquisition by manager and former QPR man Gareth Ainsworth.

Though Smyth picked up a muscle injury which would have ruled him out from mid-August until now - he played his first game in three months at MK Dons last night, coming on at half-time and playing the full second-half.

Smyth is a highly likeable footballer, and both QPR and Wycombe fans hold him in high-regards. Having already missed so much football of the season though, he’ll no doubt take a while to get back to his firing best.

The verdict

There are fewer places for a young player like Smyth to get quality loan-experience than Wycombe this season.

The Chairboys are 2nd in League one, level on points with Ipswich Town and looking like they might achieve the impossible under Ainsworth this season - Smyth could play a huge role in their campaign, and QPR fans will be excited to see him in the first-team next year.
