Following an excellent start to the season, Huddersfield Town's form has dipped significantly as a winless run stretched to five games following a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers.

Deficiencies needed to be addressed

Despite dominant performances against Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers, Huddersfield have been unable to convert their dominance in possession and territory into goals and points.

What was one of the strongest defences in the league in the first ten games of the season has lost direction and cohesion, with individual mistakes and collective mistakes when defending set pieces costing Huddersfield points.

At the same time, only 21 goals in 19 Championship games suggests that coupled with the defensive flaws, Huddersfield have been efficient enough in front of goal which will be a concern for David Wagner and Huddersfield fans alike.

However, despite the concerns facing Huddersfield Town at this moment in time, the early season form does suggest that Huddersfield have the makings of a good side but lack the quality needed in certain areas to compete at the top of the Championship.

Potential Targets

Although David Wagner has astutely dismissed these concerns, the young German manager will already be looking to the January transfer window, as a means of rectifying some of the issues that have been raised.

In an attempt to solidify his defence, David Wagner may turn to Liverpool starlet Joe Gomez as a versatile defensive option who can play across the back line and is in need of playing time following his recovery from a long-term injury.

It is looking likely that Joe Gomez will be made available for a short term loan until the end of a season with a number of Championship sides interested, but Huddersfield will surely be at the front of the queue.

The improvement of the forward line, however, is less straightforward as it may depend on the future of Bermudan striker Nahki Wells who has already begun to attract interest despite struggling for goals this season.

If Huddersfield were to opt to cash in on the 26-year-old forward, a mobile target man with the ability to hold up the play and provide a physical option which Huddersfield has lacked at times this season could be precisely what David Wagner's side needs.

It would be a risk to cash in on Nahki Wells who is a proven goalscorer in the Championship, however, Elias Kachunga has shown that David Wagner's experience of German football and the Bundesliga allows Huddersfield Town to tap into a market which is not well known to many in England.

David Wagner may feel that to take the club to another level, he needs another striker alongside Elias Kachunga that understands and fully adopts his philosophy and has the attitude and work rate to work for the team.

The Bigger Picture

A strong transfer window which deals with the deficiencies within the squad could be the injection of energy and life that is needed to rejuvenate Huddersfield Town to enable them to push on and continue to defy the odds.

Beyond another striker and another defensive option, Huddersfield Town's squad seems well rounded and two quality acquisitions could be difference between a top half finish and a playoff push.

As Huddersfield remain in the heart of the playoff picture despite dropping down to 8th place, Dean Hoyle may feel that David Wagner deserves his financial support as the club's ambitions continues to grow under David Wagner.

A third striker is looking increasingly important, particularly as it would offer Huddersfield Town, an alternative playing style to switch to against more physical opponents.

At this moment in time, David Wagner is keeping his cards very close to his chest, however, I would be very surprised if Huddersfield Town didn't make January acquisitions as another strong transfer window could be exactly what Huddersfield Town needs to have a strong second half to the season.

Huddersfield Town fans, what do you make of Huddersfield's drop of form? Is it a concern for you? Do you agree that another striker and another defender is needed?
