The Latics are currently sitting in the relegation zone but under the guidance of new boss Warren Joyce, they are starting to look up.

Wigan have had a huge number of players in recent years, the vast majority have been loan signings and this has maybe added to their downfall, but in the summer they invested money and signed players permanently.

In the long run, this will help Wigan, these players will have time to gel as a team, over a longer period of time and the new signings should slot in well.

One such summer signing who has slotted into the Wigan team seamlessly is Shaun MacDonald.

The Welsh international has been the perfect fit at Wigan and he epitomises what Warren Joyce's team is all about.

Despite it being Caldwell who signed MacDonald and not Joyce, the former Manchester United Under-21 boss will be taking the plaudits for getting the best out of MacDonald.

But for the sterling performance produced by Yanic Wildschut at Huddersfield on Monday night, MacDonald would've made a strong claim to be named the man of the match.

However the Welsh international isn't always someone who is a stand out performer, with a lot of his good work going unnoticed, which he deserves credit for.

The main attributes he brings to the team are hard work and composure on the ball.

He is always prepared to do the hard work in midfield and put his foot in where required, this is the dirty work that often goes unnoticed and it is something he deserves huge credit for, because he is one of few players in the Championship who are prepared to do it.

MacDonald is also very comfortable on the ball. He will always try and make himself available to the ball and retain possession for the team, something which Warren Joyce loves his midfielders to do.

Wigan fans... What are your thoughts on MacDonald? Do you agree that he is an unsung hero? Let us know your thought below!
