Wigan Athletic secured the service of Grimsby Town’s prolific goal scorer Omar Bogle on transfer deadline-day, and the striker has already shown signs of what a shrewd piece of business his signature could be.

Grimsby director John Fenty confirmed Wigan’s Championship rivals, Leeds United had also shown an interest in the striker but decided against matching the Latics’ bid for Bogle.

Bogle had been in impressive form for Grimsby in Sky Bet League Two this season, scoring 19 goals in just 25 appearances for the Mariners.

The 24-year old has already shown signs of adjusting to life in the Championship, scoring twice on his full debut for the club against Play-Off chasing Norwich City.

Bogle’s first goal was a powerful header from a Michael Jacobs’ corner before he fired home a 20-yard free kick just minutes later.

Wigan’s latest talisman has taken a similar career path to that of England international Jamie Vardy, moving into the Football League at a late age, following impressive displays for non-league sides.

Bogle played for both Hinckley United and Solihull Moors before joining Grimsby Town in the Football League. Since then the striker’s performances have earned him a move further up the ladder of English football.

It may seem impossible to imagine Bogle’s career taking the same route as Vardy’s, going from non-league to leading Wigan to Premier League glory, but if he can improve and continue to show his goal scoring form, he may well earn himself a chance in the Premier League.

First of all, Bogle must help his new side to survival in the Championship, Warren Joyce’s side are currently 23rd in the table and are five points adrift of safety.

Bogle could prove to be an excellent piece of business for the Latics if he manages to keep the club in the Championship and early signs have shown he could be the man to do just that.

At 24-years old, Bogle still has a long way to go in his footballing career, and it may seem a little far-fetched to suggest he could be set for the Premier League, after just two games in the second tier.

However, the striker has shown attributes that suggest he has more than enough class to shine in the Championship and maybe even gain an opportunity in the Premier League to showcase his quality, similar to the chance Vardy earned himself.
