Nottingham Forest have today been linked with a move to make West Brom assistant manager, Ben Garner, their new boss.

The search for a new boss comes after Philippe Montanier was sacked earlier this month, leaving Forest in the midst of a relegation battle.

If you need to get out of a relegation battle, who do you want at the helm? Tony Pulis and if he's not available, get the next best thing, his assistant!

Ben Garner has worked with Tony Pulis for most of his career and along the way, he will have learned what makes a Tony Pulis team so successful.

As everyone knows, a Pulis team prides themselves on their defensive solidity, which will be so crucial for Forest if they are to stay up this season.

Montanier brought an expansive style of play to Forest which was great to watch at times but it left them wide open at the back and that is why they conceded 45 goals under the Frenchman, the second most in the league; only bottom of the table Rotherham have conceded more.

If you are going to get out of a relegation battle, you need to be solid at the back and Forest aren't at the moment.

Bringing Garner to the club would certainly bring someone in who's primary focus is to sure up the defence before going all out to win a game.

The experience he will have picked up under the Pulis could prove to be invaluable for Forest if they are to beat the drop.

The West Brom boss has never been relegated in his managerial career, which is testament to the tactics he has employed.

It is most likely that Garner would bring a similar tactic to the City Ground, which I believe would be the best way forward for the rest of the season to give Forest a fighting chance of beating the drop.
