Amid the uncertainty surrounding the Scotsman at Elland Road, he had been touted as a shock candidate to takeover from countryman Dougie Freedman over the course of the summer.

Paul Williams is currently in charge of the Reds following Freedman's sacking after an alarming slide down the table left them in danger of slipping into the drop zone.

Though City Ground legend Martin O'Neill has emerged as a strong favourite in what would be an emotional return to the club he enjoyed so much success under Brian Clough, Evans has also been linked.

Out of contract with the Yorkshire giants, Fabio Cannavaro has been linked with his job.

However, the report claims the Reds have denied making an approach for the Whites chief and view the current Republic of Ireland boss as their Number 1 target for next season.

Is a move for Martin O'Neill too ambitious? Should Forest consider Evans?
