Newcastle United sent scouts to Elland Road to watch Leeds United take on Burnley on Saturday lunchtime, with the highly-rated Whites defender Sam Byram the primary target, a club insider from Leeds United has confirmed to Football League World.

Despite the 21-year-old predominantly operating as a right-back during his short career so far, Leeds boss Uwe Rosler opted to use the youngster as part of a front three for Saturday's curtain-raiser.

Despite his tender years, Byram has played 109 games for the Whites and it remains to be seen whether or not Leeds will resist the urge to sell one of their most valuable players.

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren remains in the market for new recruits with a full-back one of his priorities during the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

It is unlikely that the Whites will want to see this close to the end of the window, unless a replacement can be found - Byram could stick around at Elland Road a little while longer but it would appear that his future lies elsewhere in the long run.

Leeds fans... How big of a blow would it be to lose Byram? Does the club have a ready made replacement? Who else would you like to see the club sign before the window closes? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
