Newcastle United and Aston Villa are in the race to sign Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley, according to the Daily Mail.

The Villans have been tracking the 27-year old for a month or so now, however now Rafa Benitez has joined the chase to land the former Manchester United man, with Premier League side Watford also interested.

The Everton midfielder is out of favour under Ronald Koeman, despite having made 32 appearances for the Toffees, after impressing on loan at Villa Park in 2015.

Villa’s primary target is Nottingham Forest ace Henri Lansbury, however Bruce could look to switch his attention to Cleverley, if the deal for the 26-year old doesn’t come to fruition.

Benitez will be looking to spend big once again his January, as he looks to cement the Magpies’ at the top of the table, and Cleverley would be the perfect man to complement Jonjo Shelvey in the heart of their midfield.
