The 46-year-old was appointed Blackburn manager earlier in the week, but made sure that he kept himself involved in the game after being sacked by Aston Villa in February following a dire spell which forced Villa owner Randy Lerner into making the change of management.

Since leaving Villa, Lambert spent time learning how to improve as a coach from the best in the business, including then-Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, and Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola.

The Scot also watched Jurgen Klopp's coaching methods at Borussia Dortmund before the German left to become the new manager of Liverpool.

The former Villa boss told the Telegraph: 'I was in Madrid, Dortmund and Bayern and spoke to their managers and they had the same type of things going on.

'I was at Real for five days, Bayern five days, nine days at Dortmund when Jürgen [Klopp] was there, and I am just back from Bayer Leverkusen with Roger Schmidt for five days.'

Blackburn are currently 16th in the Championship table with 17 points, and are already 11 points away from the play-offs.

Lambert would need to have an impressive start if Rovers are going to mount a successful promotion push otherwise the gap will start to get bigger and bigger, making it extremely difficult for the former Premier League club to finish within the top six.

His first game in charge is away at Preston North End this afternoon.
