Reading deservedly picked up all three points against Guy Luzon's Charlton Athletic at the Madejski Satdium yesterday, moving the Royals into the automatic promotion places after Middlesbrough failed to beat Fulham.

Steve Clarke's side always looked the more likely to score, but a lot of the early game was played in the middle of the park, and Charlton had good spells of possession but rarely looked threatening going forward.

The in-form Nick Blackman produced a good piece of play with Orlando Sa, but the Royals failed to capitalise and visiting keeper Nick Pope saved well to deny the hosts. An excellent piece of play meant Ola John had a chance to shoot but yet again, the Charlton net remained untroubled, and then Blackman fired well over from a free kick.

After the break, Charlton struggled to contain Reading and were reduced to 10 men when Patrick Bauer was dismissed for a second bookable offence when he tripped Blackman after a good run. After Lucas Piazon had blazed the subsequent free-kick well over, Garath McCleary came on and Reading picked up momentum.

Blackman got his goal, his tenth of the season, to lift him top of the Championship goalscoring charts just before the 80th minute after Piazon's light cross was missed by the Charlton defence, leaving Blackman to power home at the far post.

Charlton had no answer after that, and Reading dominated for the rest, teasing the Addicks, and leaving the travelling fans with little to cheer about on the journey back to the capital.
