Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has refused to be drawn in to talk surrounding his side's defeat to Wigan Athletic last season ahead of the clash with the Latics at the weekend.

The Whites lost 2-1 to Paul Cook's side at Elland Road back in April, with Gavin Massey's double cancelling out Patrick Bamford's opener to kick off Leeds' four-match winless run at the end of the regular campaign.

The two sides are now set to resume acquaintances on Saturday afternoon with Leeds looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season after wins over Bristol City and Salford City, in addition to a draw with Nottingham Forest last week.

In his pre-match press conference, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post's Lee Sobot, Bielsa refused to dwell on his side's previous meeting with Wigan by claiming he could not afford to look backwards and was focused on the present.

"You forget some of the results you have against some teams and you have to focus on the present of today. I could talk a lot about the 2-1 loss but that is not the reason why we are here," he told Sobot.

The verdict

Bielsa is absolutely right in his decision to not discuss last season's 2-1 defeat, as his team is in a very different circumstance at present.

That defeat was towards the end of a long season and came at a time where the pressure was increasing on Bielsa's side with an automatic promotion place at stake.

There is now a very different mentality around Elland Road at the start of this campaign, as the squad have been boosted by new arrivals and there is a fresh reason for optimism.

Last season's result will not have any bearing on Saturday's game and I would expect Leeds to get a positive result at the DW Stadium to continue their fine start to the season.
