Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has suggested that he may play strikers Patrick Bamford and Eddie Nketiah together in the future.

Nketiah came off the bench to score an 81st-minute winner against Brentford last night, grabbing a goal in his first Championship appearance.

The Arsenal loanee has now scored on his debut for Leeds senior side, for the under-23s and in the league.

Bamford started the game against the Bees yesterday and has also made a fast start to the 2019/20 campaign, finding the net three times in his first four appearances.

Speaking to Leeds Live after the game, Bielsa was pressed on whether the duo could play together.

He replied: “It depends on the needs of the game. According to the opponent and what they are doing, we may go with two strikers.

“Sometimes playing with a lot of strikers can have positive and negative impacts. The key is to read the game and make a decision game by game.

“It is important to play both together. They mix well. One is right-footed and the other left. Down the sides. Can play one in front and one in behind. They can make the link and make movements.”

The Whites travel to bottom-of-the-league Stoke City on Saturday and it will be interesting to see whether Bielsa uses that game as an opportunity to play the two frontmen together.

The Verdict

There will likely have been concerns amongst Leeds fans when Kemar Roofe, who has been the Whites top-scorer over the past two seasons, joined Anderlecht late in the transfer window but the early indications are that they could be spoilt for choice in terms of striking options this season.

It is early days yet but the two strikers have started well and the prospect of having both of them on the pitch should excite Leeds fans.

If the Argentine coach prefers to stick with one upfront, the competition will likely be a boost for both forwards, as they will know that they if they do not keep scoring consistently Bielsa can easily replace them.
