Caleb Ekuban is hoping to be amongst the goals during the run-in after a stop-start first year with Leeds United in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Whites swooped to sign Ekuban during the summer transfer window, with the forward arriving at Elland Road on a four-year deal from Chievo.

However, two serious injuries have hindered Ekuban’s involvement this season, with the forward featuring on just 13 occasions across all competitions.

Those 13 appearances have brought just one goal, which came in the 23-year-old’s debut against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup victory back in August.

Discussing his first year in English football, Ekuban admitted he was hoping to get amongst the goals in the Championship, he told LUTV: “It’s been tough but it’s all about learning and growing up.

“I had a couple of injuries that, let’s say, killed the season for me personally, but now I’m back and I’m trying to find my rhythm. I’ve had quite a lot of opportunities to play and I just hope to get the momentum going.

“The more you play as a striker the more you feel confidence. That’s what I’m searching for and, hopefully, I can score one or two goals and have more confidence in myself.

“I just need to read situations better and have the chance to score.”

Paul Heckingbottom handed Ekuban a starting berth at Reading last weekend, with the forward spearheading Leeds’ 4-2-3-1 formation at the Madejski Stadium.

Ekuban wasn’t amongst the goals as Leeds drew 2-2 with the Royals, with Pontus Jansson and Pablo Hernandez on the scoresheet for Heckingbottom’s side.

The 23-year-old will be hoping to retain his place in the starting XI against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, but is facing competition from Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who is looking to add to the 10 goals he has scored already this season.

The Verdict

It’s been a tough year for Ekuban at Elland Road, with the forward suffering two serious injuries, which came at a time when he was set for an extended run in the first-team.

However, the forward has shown enough to suggest he will be useful to Leeds in the future, with goals the only area his game seems to be lacking.

If Ekuban can get amongst the goals in the coming nine fixtures, it will be a major boost for the forward's confidence.
