Bristol City star and captain Josh Brownhill has dedicated his match winning goal against Cardiff City in the Severnside derby to the supporters who crossed the bridge yesterday to support the side.

The 23-year-old skipper let rip from outside the area after controlling a Tommy Rowe pass and firing in to the top corner beyond the despairing dive of Neil Etheridge.

The former Preston North End youth graduate, who joined the Robins in 2016 from his boyhood club, made sure that Lee Johnson's side secured a first away win on Cardiff City turf since 2002 in emphatic fashion.

With a sold-out away end, the 67th-minute strike from Brownhill sent the visiting supporters into pandemonium and the captain was quick to praise the travelling support after the game.

The Robins skipper said: "I know we hadn’t won here for a long time so I think that one was definitely for the fans.

"It was a tough game. We know what they are about, we know they are going to cause problems with the players they have, the way they play but I thought we were excellent. We deserved the win and we defended very well.

"The fans were brilliant all the way through, so to score the goal was for them.”

Brownhill has proven this season that he is a man for the big occasion, his three goals in the Championship having all been winning efforts against Derby County, Charlton Athletic and now Cardiff.

The central midfielder has pulled on the shirts of both Preston and Barnsley during his career so far, having appeared on loan for the latter in the 2015-2016 season.

The Verdict

Bristol City fans travel in numbers over the season, and young midfielder Brownhill was right to praise the support after they have travelled in numbers to support the Robins this season.

His strike was an exceptional one that was worth of winning a derby match against the Robins' bitter rivals from across the bridge, and Brownhill showed his appreciation to the supporters in the immediate aftermath of the game following an excellent result.
