Sunderland boss Jack Ross has provided an injury update on his side following their impressive 1-0 victory over Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night.

The Black Cats have made an indifferent start to the season in League One as they have won just four of their first nine league matches, but they are making solid strides in the cup after seeing off their Premier League opponents.

Max Power's goal from range inside the first 10 minutes to put his side 1-0 in front at Bramall Lane, and Ross' side held on for the victory to send them through to the next round where they will face Oxford United.

Ross has now been speaking to the media ahead of his side's weekend clash with MK Dons in League One, and he has provided an injury update ahead of the Black Cats' visit to Stadium MK.

Sunderland shared the manager's update via their Twitter account:

Ross stopped short of revealing which players could not train on Thursday following their cup victory, but he confirmed that Elliot Embleton picked up an injury which led to him being substituted at Bramall Lane.

Embleton has made five appearances in midfield for the Black Cats so far this season, but it now looks like the 20-year-old may struggle to be available for his side's return to league action on the weekend.

The Verdict

It appears there may have been a number of casualties during Sunderland's Carabao Cup victory, which is not what Ross will need at a time when he needs to get results in the league.

The Sunderland boss has come under criticism for some of his side's results this season, and he will ideally need a full squad available if his side are to improve on their league form.

The Black Cats will certainly have their fingers crossed that Embleton's injury is not too serious, as the club's youth product has looked promising on the occasions he has played this campaign so far.

The Sheffield United result is bound to have injected some much-needed confidence into the Sunderland side, so the last thing Ross now needs is a string of injuries to set his side back further.
