However meaningless it might be at this stage of the season, Sheffield Wednesday sit at the top of the Championship table after a hugely impressive start to the 2019/20 campaign.

The Owls endured a turbulent summer, with Steve Bruce looking like he was putting together a really strong squad, before his sudden departure to Premier League side Newcastle United.

Wednesday are yet to appoint a permanent successor to the 58-year-old with caretaker boss Lee Bullen doing a terrific job in temporary charge, guiding the Owls to wins against Reading and Barnsley in their first two games of the season.

Could, and should, the 48-year-old be rewarded after steadying the ship and picking up two wins from two games whilst in charge? Discussing Bullen's current situation at Hillsborough in today's six-pointer is George Harbey...

Firstly just how much of an impact has Bullen made at Wednesday since the departure of Bruce?

"Bullen has been excellent for Wednesday after what was a massive blow in losing Bruce to Newcastle.

"It would have been a really hard time for the players, both old and new, when he left for St. James' Park, especially when his departure came so close to the start of the season.

"But, full credit to Bullen - he has come in, raised the spirits of the players, and it looks to have worked having won their first two games of the season.

"He also played a huge part in bringing in Massimo Luongo and Jacob Murphy to the club on Deadline Day, and both look to be very shrewd signings indeed."

How impressed have you been with Wednesday in the first couple of games?

"Wednesday have been really impressive in the first two games of the season, picking up two very different wins.

"They went to a tough place in Reading on the opening day of the campaign, played wonderful football at times and showed real grit and character to pick up all three points after being reduced to 10 men.

"They were dominant against Barnsley at the weekend, and that is impressive in itself, as it was a game that really could have gone either way given that it was a local derby."

What has Bullen said about potentially becoming permanent manager?

"Bullen has remained coy and level-headed on the prospects of becoming the manager of Wednesday on a permanent basis, and you can't really blame him.

"Games come thick and fast in the Championship at this stage of the season, and all he will want to do is concentrate is picking up points and taking each game as it comes, no matter how much of a cliche it might be.

"He recently told the Yorkshire Post: "It is for other people at the club to make any sort of decision on that and I am sure they are relatively happy with the way things are going at the moment. I will come in on Monday morning and prepare a training session and try to beat Millwall next week and that is all I can do." - it's clear that his feet are well on the ground."

What does Bullen need to do if he were to be appointed as Owls manager permanently?

"There's not much that Bullen really needs to do if he were to become the new manager of Wednesday on a permanent basis.

"He clearly has a close connection with the players, they are playing magnificent football, and the results are positive. Long may that continue from an Owls perspective.

"I suppose that managing each player to the best of his ability and coping with blips and bumps along the way will be hugely important, and a skill that he will have to get his head around if he were appointed."

How do you think fans would feel if he were to be appointed permanently?

"I think that Bullen has definitely got the backing of Wednesday fans, and after such a good start, they'd surely want him to get it permanently.

"He's a man that has a really close affinity with the club, the fans love him and he loves them, and sometimes having that connection with a manager means more than going out and appointing another experienced boss who has been there and done it.

"Some would have their doubts, which is only natural given his lack of experience, but I think the general consensus would be right behind the decision."

Finally, should Lee Bullen be given the role on a permanent basis?

"It's certainly looking like they will give him the job on a permanent basis. It's almost looking inevitable now.

"If they can pick up a decent result against Millwall this weekend, then their decision should be inevitable as The Den is a tough, tough place to go.

"The appointment would have shocked fans a couple of weeks ago, but there is nothing shocking about the prospect of him becoming Wednesday manager now."
