Barnsley are yet to appoint a new permanent manager, with caretaker Adam Murray still at the helm heading into the weekend fixture at home to high-flying Swansea City.

There is though, some continuity within the Tykes' coaching staff with Murray confirming that Chris Stern and Dale Tonge, who worked under previous boss Daniel Stendel, were remaining as part of the coaching staff.

So, do you feel it's the right decision that Barnsley have retained the services of both Stern and Tonge?

We discuss.........

Liam Drury

"Recently, it was confirmed that Chris Stern and Dale Tonge were set to stay at Barnsley as part of the backroom setup, following the departure of German manager Daniel Stendel.

"For the players, it is good to see Stern and Tonge around the place as it gives the club that continuity and doesn’t just chuck the pair on the scrapheap, always the easy option when sacking a manager.

"The pair already know the players, they know their strengths and weaknesses and they can advise any incoming manager on the difficult team selection choices that he’ll be faced with from day one.

"The players will still have a friendly face for them to talk to around the club if they don’t feel confident enough yet when the new manager arrives, and Stern and Tonge are both steady heads on the touchline so therefore them remaining part of the setup in Yorkshire is a good move for all the parties involved."

Louie Chandler

"This will be a small consolation to Barnsley fans.

"But ultimately it is a good thing. Had there been a complete midseason overhaul I would have been worried that relegation would be a certainty.

"This at least shows that the board are being a bit pragmatic in their approach of replacing him, although who they bring in will still have a huge impact on their season.

"You feel a steady pair of hands is needed now to keep them in contention until January, and then they can perhaps consider climbing higher."

George Brooks

"Absolutely. Stern and Tonge have been crucial to the success that Bansley have achieved recently, including when they won promotion from League One last season.

"They both know the club very well and will know how to get the best out of the players. Barnsley need to start winning games soon and the new manager will be under pressure to deliver results straight away.

"Stern and Tonge will be able to help Stendel's successor, whoever that may be, and offer him advice on the team.

"The new manager will probably want to bring some of his own staff in too, but I think it's so important that Stern and Tonge remain part of the set-up, so it's a sensible decision from the club in that sense."
