Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer is casting his net north of the border as he looks to strengthen his squad with a move for Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty being considered, according to a report on STV Sport, though he faces competition, with Sunderland also reported to be interested.

Charlton want the 23-year-old midfielder until the end of the season as his likely Gers exit grows ever closer, with Gerrard wanting to trim the Light Blues squad this month.

So would Docherty be a good signing at the Valley, is he needed and would he make the starting XI?

We discuss.........

Ethan Van Ristell

"Docherty has been a bit-part figure this season at Rangers, making a total of just six appearances this season for Steven Gerrard's side.

"The 23-year-old is a central midfielder by trade, who can make driving runs towards the box, as well as score important goals. For context, Docherty is a similar type of player to former Addicks loanee Conor Gallagher.

"Therefore, straight away, he would fit in to Lee Bowyer's system, and it could be argued that a replacement for Gallagher is needed at the club. In that respect, this signing makes sense.

"He scored seven goals on loan at Shrewsbury last season in League One, and contributed with eight assists. From those statistics alone, bringing Docherty to The Valley could be a sensible idea."

"Charlton are yet to really splash the cash since their takeover was finalised at the start of the month, but Docherty could well be their first marquee signing of this new era. He's been an outcast at Rangers this season, and it's looking likely that Steven Gerrard will seek a loan-move for the midfielder.

"A permanent move away from Ibrox seems unlikely - he's still a young player, and Rangers is his boyhood club. All that fans have to go on Docherty is his loan-spell at Shrewsbury Town last season, where played 41 times in the league scoring seven from midfield, and being names Shrewsbury's Player of the Year. As well as spending a few seasons with Hamilton in the SPL, he's slowly building up some solid experience.

"I think he's definitely needed at Charlton though. They've had a torrid time with injuries this season, and anyone they can get in will likely play their part. I also think that he'd be a good player for Lee Bowyer's side - he'll have a point to prove after being left out by Gerrard in Scotland this season, and he could well come in to Charlton and fire them back up the table.

"Bowyer should push for a loan-move for Docherty - a permanent deal looks unlikely and it'd be a risk on a player who's only played one season in English football. That season was a promising one though and it's surprising that he's not playing more for Rangers. Nevertheless, Bowyer needs to start signing some players, especially after losing Conor Gallagher this week."

Louie Chandler

"This could be a clever move from Charlton, but it does not come without its risks.

"Docherty was very impressive whilst on loan with Shrewsbury last season in League One and, based on those performances, looks like the ideal replacement for Conor Gallagher.

"He is incredibly high energy, capable of breaking up play, and has a real eye for goal as well, notching ten for himself and contributing 11 assists.

"But the fact he has been so out of use at Ibrox this season will be a concern, as will the fact he has never played in the Championship."
