Newcastle United reportedly turned down an approach from Paris Saint-Germain in January to sign striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, claims TheGamblingTimes.com insider Graeme Bailey.

A number of clubs have been keeping close tabs on the 22-year old, and Rafa Benitez quickly rejected an approach from the French giants, who were allegedly ready to pay £15million for the powerful forward.

Mitrovic is highly regarded at St. James' Park, netting 14 times in 52 appearances for the Magpies since joining from RSC Anderlecht in 2015, and has recently returned to first team action following Dwight Gayle's injury.

Despite this, he has been in-and-out of the side this season and has started just seven league games for the Geordies, however the Newcastle chief remains convinced that he will come good.

Newcastle remain in a title chasing hunt with second-placed Brighton and Hove Albion, with what looks to be a Championship title deciding encounter coming next Tuesday at the AMEX Stadium.

The Toon face Lee Johnson's struggling Bristol City at St James' Park on Saturday, in a match that Benitez will be expected to secure three points to help cement their place in the top two.
