Football League World’s Rotherham United fan pundit Luke Pickford has suggested he would like to see Blyth Spartans forward Callum Roberts given an opportunity to show what he is capable of with the Millers.

Roberts is a product of the Newcastle United academy and left the Premier League club to join Blyth Spartans on a free transfer in the summer.

According to the Yorkshire Post, the 23-year-old’s fast start to the season in the National League North with seven goals in eight games including two hat-tricks has drawn the attention of Rotherham who are now set to take the forward on trial.

Roberts was sent on loan multiple times while at Newcastle but struggled to really make an impact.

However, with his recent form in mind, Pickford has suggested he would like to the forward given an opportunity.

He said: “It’s a big jump, but I’d like to see the opportunity given and for the player to show what he’s capable of.

“Would he be a good signing? It’s early to say.”

Pickford explained why he felt Roberts could be a good addition.

He said: “As a striker, I think it offers the club more options.

“I think Roberts has an eye for a goal from his recent form, which is always positive.

“He seems agile and capable of making quick and decisive runs. I think having him as an option will be of interest to Paul Warne, especially now with the new adopted 4-3-3 formation.”

After suffering Championship relegation last season, Rotherham have made a disappointing start to the 2019/20 campaign.

Warne’s side sit 13th in the table, seven points shy of the play-off places, and face 4th-place Coventry City on Saturday.
