Leeds United have got off to a relatively strong start to this year's league campaign, as they look to win a long-awaited promotion to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa's side currently sit fifth in the Championship table, but will be keen to get back to winning ways after a defeat to Millwall before the international break.

One player that is going to be key for the Whites is Luke Ayling, who has recently returned to the first team picture from a spell in the treatment room.

The experienced full-back has signed a new contract with Leeds this season, and will be keen to repay the faith shown in by the club.

In a recent interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post, Ayling issued his thoughts on his new contract, and labelled it as 'a great confidence boost'.

"They’ve signed me to three extra years, so it does give you great confidence, especially me with the problem with my ankle.

"They’ve still come to me and said I’m part of their plans.

"It was a great confidence boost, coming back into the team knowing I’ve signed that deal, knowing I’m here for the next four years."

The 28-year-old went on to admit that he has high-hopes for Leeds' promotion chances, and feels that he will achieve his goals before his contract expires in the summer of 2023.

"It was really nice when my agent called me and said they want to tie you down for longer.

"It was really nice to know that my work over a few years hasn’t gone unnoticed and I’ve got a new deal from it.

"I’ve signed a new deal, I’ve got three more years and I’m sure that by the time I leave or I’m forced out, I think our goal will be achieved."

Ayling and his Leeds teammates are next in action on Saturday when they take on Birmingham City at Elland Road, in what will be a tough test for Bielsa's side.

The Verdict:

He's going to be a key player for the Whites this season.

Ayling really impressed me last term and he'll be keen to stay clear of injuries which have halted his career in recent years.

If he can do that, then I can see Leeds being up there challenging for promotion to the Premier League once again, although they'll need to find some consistency in their results if recent performances are anything to go by.
