The future of striker Rudy Gestede is certainly up in the air.

The forward decided to end his spell at Boro early and not see out the rest of the campaign with the Championship relegation strugglers, thus making him a free agent.

Gestede has had plenty of experience plying his trade in the second tier of English football, with him enjoying spells at the likes of Blackburn and Boro, whilst also having a stint in the top-flight with Aston Villa.

So, what next for Gestede? Are there any EFL sides that should be looking to sign up the player with him set to be available on a free? If so, who and why?

The team here at FLW discuss and debate....

I think a few will in the Championship but whether they go for him depends on his wage demands.

He's perhaps not always been the most consistent but he can be a good forward and target man at Championship level who, with the right set-up around him, could be a success.

There's an element of risk with this one just because of that uncertainty but, on a free, maybe you could see a few sides taking a look that need more attacking options for next season.

I look at the likes of Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, maybe Blackburn given the success he had there before, as sides that may want to add in the final third but can't break the bank.

You’ve got to imagine that a few would like to take a look at Gestede, if the finances behind the deal are right.

Somewhere like Huddersfield would be a good move for the striker, providing they stay in the Championship.

Danny Cowley has a big goal problem at the moment and his side have drawn blanks in their last four fixtures. Plus, they may lose Karlan Grant, which only heightens the need for a couple of attacking reinforcements.

The interest will be there from the Championship and for me Huddersfield should be interested.

However, I’m half expecting to see Gestede depart the English game. It hasn’t worked out for him recently and a fresh start elsewhere is probably needed.

This is a tough one as I don't believe Gestede showed any signs of being able to cut it in the Championship anymore after his time at Boro.

Gestede used to be a real nightmare for opposition defences during his time at Blackburn Rovers. He was lethal in the air and he seemed to head every cross into the net, and he was on fire alongside Jordan Rhodes in the final third of the pitch.

But since leaving for Aston Villa and then joining Middlesbrough, Gestede seemed to lose his mojo and lose all confidence in front of goal, and I don't think he painted himself in any glory given how his time at the Riverside ultimately came to an end.

He could do a job for someone like Charlton, who lack that focal point up top since the departure of Lyle Taylor. Lee Bowyer is a fantastic coach who tends to get the best out of his players, and if he were to put an arm around Gestede, then he could turn him into a really useful striker.

I don't think there's too many sides who would go near him, though.
