One of the most surprising transfers of the summer saw Jota cross the Second City divide by signing for Aston Villa from Birmingham City.

The Spaniard was a huge purchase for Blues when he arrived in the summer of 2017 and you could understand why. He had shone for Brentford in the Championship and was seen as the player who could fire a new-look Birmingham side to the Premier League under Harry Redknapp.

Of course, it didn't work out and he managed just eight goals in 72 league games during a very forgettable period for the club.

Therefore, it was a surprise to see Villa take the attacking midfielder on, even though at £4m he was a very modest fee for a side that have the Premier League riches to help them.

As well as that, the fact Jota had worked with Dean Smith at Brentford before, where he was outstanding, meant Villa thought this was a risk worth taking.

However, things haven't gone to plan for the player since he made the short move to Blues' bitter rivals.

Birmingham Quiz: Can you get 18 out of 18?

No goals and just one assist in five Premier League fixtures shows that he is finding the step up rough, whilst the 28-year-old hasn't been helped by injuries, with a hernia meaning he hasn't played in the top-flight since mid-September.

Although, even prior to that, the ex-Eibar man was by no means a regular starter and he will face a battle to get back in the XI when he does return to full fitness.

With all that in mind, it's fair to say that Jota's controversial move hasn't really worked out - which is exactly what Blues fans would have wanted.
