Swansea City winger Joel Asoro has made an underwhelming start to life on loan at FC Groningen with the Swede having failed to break into the starting line-up at his new club.

Asoro was sent on loan to the Dutch club back in August having failed to establish himself at Swansea since making the £2million move from League One side Sunderland in the summer of 2018.

The 20-year-old started Swansea's opening game of the 2018/19 season, but Asoro was then limited to just 14 Championship appearances last term with the likes of Wayne Routledge and Daniel James ahead of him in the pecking order.

Following his challenging first season at the Liberty Stadium, new Swansea boss Steve Cooper then sanctioned a loan move for Asoro to join Groningen this season in order to help him gain some much-needed playing time.

However, things have not quite gone to plan since Asoro's switch to the Eredivisie. He has been named in the match-day squad for each of Groningen's matches since his arrival, but he has only made it on the pitch once.

His single appearance for his new club came as a three-minute cameo during their 3-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven last month, while his only other outings in the Netherlands have come for Groningen's reserve side.

The first team have made a slightly below-par start to the season as they currently sit 12th in the table after nine matches, but Asoro has still clearly not impressed manager Danny Buijs enough to earn regular minutes.

The Sweden U21 international arrived in South Wales with plenty of promise last year, but his career has stalled since this move and his lack of playing time in the Eredivise is the latest epitome this struggle.
