Hockadays time at Elland Road seems to be up

Leeds United head coach Dave Hockaday was pleased with the Championship club's 2-0 win in a pre-season friendly against Conference North side Guiseley.

Goals from defender Jason Pearce and striker Matt Smith were enough for the Yorkshire outfit to defeat their local opponents on Saturday, though patience was required as both strikes came during the last five minutes of the match.

Nevertheless, while he thinks more quality in the final third of the pitch is needed, Hockaday was happy with both his team's possession game and their defending, and said the decision to use two separate line-ups at the weekend - one for the opening 60 minutes, the other for the remaining half-hour - was necessary in order to look at different playing systems.

"What I wanted to do was dominate possession against a good footballing team and I wanted to keep a clean sheet," the 56-year-old told the official Leeds website.

"I am happy with that and it is what we do with the ball now that we need to work on. The basic culture of the team is going to be different now, we want to keep the ball and we need to get better in the final third.

The former Forest Green Rovers manager, whose first competitive game in charge of Leeds will come on 9 August at Millwall, added: "We are having a look at lots of things. At the moment we are trying different formations and combinations.

"It is all about fitness but the fact is that we have kept a clean sheet, we’ve won the game and we dominated possession, they are three great things.

"In the final third we need to have better quality. If that was the case we could have run out very comfortable winners."
