Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper has signed for A-League side Wellington Pheonix, which appears to have upset many fans of the Yorkshire club.

The 31-year-old has been a free agent since he saw his contract with Wednesday expire in the summer.

Hooper joined the Owls from Norwich City permanently in January 2016, having spent the first half of the season on loan at Hillsborough.

The Englishman scored 31 goals and provided 12 assists in 89 appearances for the Yorkshire club–helping them make it to the play-off final in the 2015/16 campaign.

Hooper started for Wednesday in the final against Hull City but was unable to help them achieve promotion as his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat.

The forward saw his playtime greatly reduced last season and appeared just six times for the club–scoring once.

The Owls have been short of quality striking options outside Steven Fletcher this season, with Atdhe Nuhiu, Sam Winnall and Jordan Rhodes scoring just three goals between them.

That fact appears not to be lost on large parts of the Hillsborough faithful, with many Wednesday fans taking to Twitter to express their disappointment at Hooper signing elsewhere.
