Sheffield Wednesday's play-off hopes were dealt a frustrating blow earlier this month, with Steven Fletcher being ruled out of action with a knee injury.

The forward has been key to the Owls' strong start to this year's campaign, scoring 12 goals in 24 appearances.

Sheffield Wednesday were thrashed 5-0 in their last league game by Blackburn Rovers and will be hoping to bounce back on Tuesday when they return to action.

They're currently sat tenth in the Championship table, and will be targeting a top-six finish this term, with Garry Monk's side just four points adrift of sixth place in the second tier standings.

Speaking to The Star, Monk issued an update on Fletcher's rehabilitation process, and stated that the Scotsman is on schedule to return to action on time.

"He is still indoors. He is not outside at the moment.

"As far as I am aware and speaking to the physios every day, he is on schedule."

The Owls boss went on to reveal that he was unable to give a time frame on when Fletcher would return from injury, but remained hopeful that he can progress well.

"I can't put a date on it because we don't know but he is still doing his rehab in the gym. He is working every day with the physios and doing well.

"He has not had any setbacks so far so hopefully he can progress quickly."

Monk's side are next in action when they travel to the DW Stadium to take on relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic in what could prove to be a potentially tricky test for the Owls.

The Verdict:

It's good to hear that he's on track in his recovery from an injury lay-off.

Fletcher has been one of Sheffield Wednesday's key players this season with () goals to his name so far in this year's campaign. So, to lose him to injury would have been frustrating for Monk and the club's supporters.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Monk dip into the transfer market before Friday's deadline, as he looks to find an adequate replacement to fire them back into the play-off places.

I'm still not convinced that Atdhe Nuhiu or Sam Winnall are up to the job of filling the sizeable void left by the Scotsman for the next few months.
