Sheffield Wednesday are a club on the up in the Championship under new owners and manager, and look well set for a playoff place this season.

The Owls are investing well in their squad and trying to breed excellent young players at the same time, and it really is an exciting time to be an Owl these days.

Over the coming seasons, they will be looking to add to their squad, keep the best pros at the club, and blood new young players as well, with the hope of developing an excellent side capable of competing at all levels.

They will expect to reach the Premier League this season or next, and it begs the question about where they would go with their playing squad after they reach the top flight.

With the future in mind at Hillsborough, FLW writer Lee Connor looks at what could be the future XI in five years time for Sheffield Wednesday...

GK - Joe Wildsmith

The young goalkeeper is already firmly part of the squad at Hillsborough, and with Kieran Westwood to learn from, should become a top goalkeeper.

Wildsmith already has excellent attributes, and he could go on to be the number one for many years to come in S6.

DEF - Sam Hutchinson

The current Owls hero is one of the fan favourites and his career moves on, he could well find himself moving further back into the defence rather than his current midfield role.

A top player, he is certainly going to be around for a while yet.

DEF -Vincent Sasso

The defender has only recently broken back into the team due to injuries to other players, but has looked pretty decent so far.

He will only just be in to his 30's in five years time, and could well develop into an excellent centre back at Championship level.

DEF- Morgan Fox

The new signing has impressed so far when selected ahead of Daniel Pudil, and looks to have a solid future at Hillsborough.

He looks a real capture by the club, and definitely one for the future at just 23-years-old at the moment.

MID - Jack Stobbs

Young academy player Stobbs has already been in and around the first team and could well be one who makes the grade in the next few seasons.

Stobbs is highly regarded at Hillsborough, and could make a big impression soon.

MID - Sean Clare

Another current academy player, Clare has been out on loan gaining first team experience this season.

He might well earn a new contract this summer with the Owls, and then push on from their to cement a place in the team.

MID - Lewis Baker

At just 21, former Owls loanee Baker has been impressing with Vitesse this season.

An England under-21 international and a top young player for Chelsea, the Owls could look to sign Baker again over the next few seasons if he continues to impress.

MID- Adam Reach

B

The left winger cost a decent fee this season, and at 24 should find himself in the team for a few years yet.

Reach should make the left wing spot his own in the coming seasons, and prove an excellent investment.

Fwd - George Hirst

A young prospect who is the son of former Owls legend David, he has already made impacts in and around the first team.

He is expected to cement a place in the Wednesday starting line-up in the coming seasons, and is highly regarded at Hillsborough.

Fwd - Fernando Forestieri

The diminutive little striker could still be at Hillsborough for years to come, and despite the fact he will be in his 30's, he will still be able to offer plenty to the team.

He is currently one of the Owls' top players and could well still find himself in the same position in five years time.

Fwd - Jordan Rhodes

The big money signing will be expected to deliver over more than a few seasons, and by the time five years rolls around, he could well be the experienced head in a strike force with the likes of George Hirst.

Rhodes will still have his striking instincts, and will more than likely be an excellent player for the Owls over many years.
