Sky Bet League One side Coventry City have announced on their official website that they have secured a deal which sees Newcastle United midfielder Gael Bigirimana return to the club on a permanent basis.

The 22-year-old came through the academy at Coventry before joining Newcastle, and re-joined the Sky Blues last season on loan from the Magpies. He pens a one-year deal with Coventry upon his return.

He made 28 appearances in his debut season for the Sky Blues after bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old prodigy, and after winning Championship Apprentice of the Year, he earned a move to Premier League Newcastle for an undisclosed fee.

However, the central midfielder struggled to break into the first team picture at St. James' Park, only managing 13 league appearances in four years with the club. He scored his only professional goal against Wigan Athletic in 2012.

The Burundi international had loan spells at Rangers and then back at Coventry last season, but his impact was limited with the Sky Blues as he failed to nail down a regular spot in the team.

Manager Tony Mowbray has seen enough to offer him permanent terms though, with the young midfielder taking the number five shirt at Coventry.

Bigirimana will be hoping to have an immediate impact on a Coventry side who have started sluggishly in League One. Mowbray's side have picked up just two points from their first four matches, and face a tricky test at home to Northampton Town tomorrow.
