Barnsley are set to announce Gerhard Struber as the club's new manager later on Wednesday, a report from Sky Sports has claimed.

The Tykes have been looking for a new manager since the sacking of Daniel Stendel at the start of October, and it appears as though they have finally got their man.

Struber has reportedly been in talks with Barnsley the Championship side were given permission to open negotiations with the 42-year-old by his current club - Austrian top-flight outfit Wolfsberger AC - earlier this week, with a compensation package now seemingly agreed between the two sides.

The Austrian had only taken charge of Wolfsberger earlier this season, and will leave them third in the Austrian Bundesliga, with eight wins from their 14 league games.

It has been a difficult return to the Championship for Barnsley since they won promotion from League One at the first time of asking last season, with the Yorkshire side now winless since the opening day of the current campaign, leaving them bottom of the current second-tier standings.

If Struber is indeed confirmed on Wednesday, then his first game as Barnsley manager will be at Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon, as Barnsley travel across the Pennines to face Blackburn Rovers.

The Verdict

There may be some rather mixed feelings about this around Oakwell.

On the one hand, the fact that Barnsley are appointing a manager with no prior knowledge of the Championship could be a concern, particularly when you look at the struggle Stendel had in adapting to this level.

In contrast to that however, getting this appointment done now does mean there is still plenty of time in the season for Barnsley to turn their focus completely back to on-pitch matters as they fight for survival in the Championship.

Indeed, Struber is at least set to arrive at the club with a decent league record so far this season, which could offer some cause those around the club to be optimistic going forward.
